EEL Energy, a pioneer in membrane-based hydro-generators, closed yesterday a new equity round with existing shareholders. The transaction also marked the arrival of new investors, French and US based business angels, attracted by the recent track record of the company.
In May, EEL Energy reached an important milestone with the piloting of a 30-50KW hydrogenator in Brest, France. Early results confirm the company’s success in scaling the 3-5KW prototypes that have been in operation for the last 2 years. The machine, built as a floating device, captures kinetic energy from river or tidal currents near the water surface where highest water velocity is typically found. This important milestone paves the way for the further scaling of the technology to 100-150KW systems for river and tidal markets, and a 750KW-1MW tidal hydro-generator.
In parallel, EEL Energy is preparing the commercial launch early 2023 of a 3-5KW offering for rural electrification (rivers or canals). The solution is an attractive alternative to diesel generators, expensive to operate and highly carbonated, and can be implemented as main or back-up power in conjunction with solar, wind and energy storage.
Finally, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Emmanuel Barre as Chairman of the EEL Energy effective July 1st. Emmanuel will work jointly with Franck Sylvain, CEO of the company. Emmanuel comes to EEL Energy with a strong background in strategy and business development, leveraging senior global business development roles in the energy segments of GE. Emmanuel began his career in investment banking with major firms, followed by a successful venture as entrepreneur. Emmanuel acts as strategy and operating partner, and investor, to accelerate startups enabling the energy transition.
About EEL Energy : EEL Energy is a French Deeptech engaged in the development of a biomimetic membrane-based hydrogenator that captures kinetic energy from river or tidal current. The patented technology primarily addresses the needs of shore-based populations (estimated globally at 1 billion) and industries without access to electricity or at prohibitive prices. Our technology is reliable, cost-efficient, environmentally friendly and decarbonated, and of acute relevance in today’s energy crisis. Join us and together let’s shake Hydro, the forgotten giant in the Renewable mix !

EEL Energy defies the laws of physics !
Over the last 9 months, EEL has successfully scaled up with a 30kW tidal generator tested in the harbor of Brest (Brittany, France).
The results of this pilot exceed all our expectations and catapult a physical limit that applies to all conventional tidal turbines !! Our undulating membrane generator managed to capture 62% of the energy of the current, exceeding for the first time the famous Betz law that sets a physical limit at 59% !
And this is only a first step. Our first pre-commercial 30-50kW machine will be on a river in June and we are preparing a 750kW marine project.
These achievements were made possible thanks to the FEDER Hauts de France funds and the Interreg ENCORE program, as well as support from Frisquet, Dassault Systèmes, 3DEXPERIENCE Lab and Aquanord.
Stay tuned ! EEL Energy, Nature’s Choice for Marine Energy

Live with the 3DExperienceLab of Dassault Systemes to talk about GREEN ENERGY in season 2 episode 1. How to produce reliable, sustainable and affordable green energy? What if tapping into the circular economy and the ocean’s energy was the key? Discover the interviews of Marco Karber and Franck Sylvain, respectively CEO of AES and EEL Energy, a live report realized by Marion Moreau, tech journalist and Frederic Vacher, Head of Innovation at Dassault Systèmes.
Two disruptive innovations accelerated in the 3DEXPERIENCE Lab program.

The EEL Energy team was able to test this month of December, the scale model of our future 50KW tidal turbine.
The trials of this mini-barge went very well in the canal of our partner Aquanord in Gravelines and the green light was given to launch the construction of the new 50KW barge This 50KW tidal device will be tested in Brest harbor during the 2nd quarter of 2022 with the TSM Iroise mer teams that we know very well.
The EEL revolution is on the way and as French people we know a bit about revolution!

Finally, we were able to organize a visit from European funders FEDER Hauts de France AND ENCORE thanks to the improvement of sanitary conditions.
We were able to show the two prototypes producing green electricity in the Aquanord discharge channel and the financing managers were able to see the progress and reliability of the EEL technology.

Thank you to Europe1 and Raphaëlle Duchemin for inviting us to talk about biomimicry and of course EEL ENERGY. To learn more, join us at the biomim’expo exhibition at the Cité des Sciences on October 22.

Biomimicry is a fast-growing approach, at the heart of disruptive innovation strategies of research centers, large companies and start-ups, on many subjects, including the energy transition… The approach allows us to break out of silos to innovate through decompartmentalized approaches, inspired by 3.8 billion years of R&D of living organisms! Biomim’expo, allowed the largest worldwide gathering of biomimicry. In the prestigious setting of the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie, Franck Sylvain, CEO of EEL ENERGY, was able to present the EEL ENERGY project to an audience of over 1000 participants.

ENCORE: Energizing Coastal Regions with Offshore Renewable Energy
EEL Energy has just installed two EEL tidal turbines in the Aquanord canal. It is a world first to see two tidal turbines operating so close to each other without interfering with each other and without any nuisance. This will pave the way for the installation of tidal turbine farms in the tidal currents that are very present in France and the UK. The proof is made that we will also be able to put some in the rivers.

EEL ENERGY has just been awarded by the Hauts de France region and its President, Xavier Bertrand, an aid in the framework of the European funds FEDER.
This 950K€ grant concerns its “Opal’EEL” project which covers the design, the assembly and the test on a test site of a 30KW wave membrane tidal turbine prototype.
This mark of confidence further strengthens the anchoring of the project in the Hauts de France region, with a location in Boulogne sur Mer which allows the project to be close to the IFREMER test basin, where all the tests are conducted on a small scale. It is also in the region that tests have been carried out in recent months, still on a small scale but under in situ conditions, in an aquaculture farm, tests that have allowed the machine to be tested and the maintenance operations to be tested for several weeks.

Eel energy has just obtained a first aid of 500K euros from the BPI and the Nord-Pas de Calais region. The company’s historical shareholders are subscribing to a €500k convertible bond. This financing will allow the company to finalize the 1/6 scale prototype intended for sea trials, and to launch the development work for the first 1/1 scale demonstrator.
Jean-Baptiste Drevet and Franck Sylvain are delighted with the support of the BPI and their shareholders who believe in this extraordinary project.
