EEL Energy defies the laws of physics ?
Over the last 9 months, EEL has successfully scaled up with a 30kW tidal generator tested in the harbor of Brest (Brittany, France).
The results of this pilot exceed all our expectations and catapult a physical limit that applies to all conventional tidal turbines !!
Our undulating membrane generator managed to capture 62% of the energy of the current, exceeding for the first time the famous Betz law that sets a physical limit at 59% !
And this is only a first step.
Our first pre-commercial 30-50kW machine will be on a river in June and we are preparing a 750kW marine project.
These achievements were made possible thanks to the FEDER Hauts de France funds and the Interreg ENCORE program, as well as support from Frisquet, Dassault Systèmes, 3DEXPERIENCE Lab and Aquanord.
Stay tuned!
EEL Energy, Nature’s Choice for Marine Energy
EEL Energy is a French company that develops a new generation of hydro-generators producing renewable energy from an undulating membrane. Our patented technology for River and Tidal applications is inspired by the efficient and sometimes spectacular movement that propels the fastest fish on earth, reaching up to 110km/h under water !

EEL Energy accelerates its developement
EEL Energy, a pioneer in membrane-based hydro-generators, closed yesterday a new equity round with existing shareholders. The transaction also marked the arrival of new investors, French and US based business angels, attracted by the recent track record of the company.
In May, EEL Energy reached an important milestone with the piloting of a 30-50KW hydrogenator in Brest, France. Early results confirm the company’s success in scaling the 3-5KW prototypes that have been in operation for the last 2 years. The machine, built as a floating device, captures kinetic energy from river or tidal currents near the water surface where highest water velocity is typically found. This important milestone paves the way for the further scaling of the technology to 100-150KW systems for river and tidal markets, and a 750KW-1MW tidal hydro-generator.
In parallel, EEL Energy is preparing the commercial launch early 2023 of a 3-5KW offering for rural electrification (rivers or canals). The solution is an attractive alternative to diesel generators, expensive to operate and highly carbonated, and can be implemented as main or back-up power in conjunction with solar, wind and energy storage.
Finally, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Emmanuel Barre as Chairman of the EEL Energy effective July 1st. Emmanuel will work jointly with Franck Sylvain, CEO of the company. Emmanuel comes to EEL Energy with a strong background in strategy and business development, leveraging senior global business development roles in the energy segments of GE. Emmanuel began his career in investment banking with major firms, followed by a successful venture as entrepreneur. Emmanuel acts as strategy and operating partner, and investor, to accelerate startups enabling the energy transition.
About EEL Energy : EEL Energy is a French Deeptech engaged in the development of a biomimetic membrane-based hydrogenator that captures kinetic energy from river or tidal current. The patented technology primarily addresses the needs of shore-based populations (estimated globally at 1 billion) and industries without access to electricity or at prohibitive prices. Our technology is reliable, cost-efficient, environmentally friendly and decarbonated, and of acute relevance in today’s energy crisis. Join us and together let’s shake Hydro, the forgotten giant in the Renewable mix !
EEL ENERGY in” une minute pour innover” on France2
Sunday March 20 after Laurent Delahousse’s newscast on France2 EEL Energy was on the program for a minute to innovate. Many thanks to Volkswagen, BRUT and France Television for selecting EEL!
EEL Energy invited to the One Ocean Summit in Brest
EEL Energy was able to present its biomimetic tidal turbine to produce green, carbon-free energy without waste discharge, without visual or noise pollution, without impact on fauna and flora and above all the only PREDICTIBLE renewable energy!
